SMU ASSOCIATION FOR PUBLIC INTEREST LAW (APIL)

APIL is a group of SMU law students committed to public service. Each year, APIL raises money to provide stipends for law students who are interning for nonprofit agencies or public interest organizations during the summer. APIL stipends allow future lawyers to gain community-minded experience and training and provide much needed legal assistance to charitable organizations and their clients.

What Is Public Interest Law?

Public interest law encompasses a wide range of legal fields, including work with non-profit organizations, government agencies, and private practice. It addresses critical issues such as civil rights, immigration and asylum, healthcare, social justice, environmental protection, women's rights, and more. The primary mission of public interest lawyers is to advocate for underrepresented individuals or causes. At SMU, we offer a government and public interest externship program, specialized courses in public interest law, and a student organization (APIL) that hosts events designed to connect students with attorneys practicing in this vital area of law.
